The modern vernacular for “monetize” is actually just an broadening of 2 & 3. It’s a recognition that essential anything can be converted in to currency, not just metals, paper, and government debt.

As much as it has become part of buzzword bingo, the folks who probably started using the term were trying to express a meaningful concept.

I heard a great replacement for “monetize” at the pub tonight: “Benjamize,” or “Benjamization” as the case may be. I think that’s definitely the better word to use.

  7. Christopher Smith Says:

Benjamzie is probably better than some equivalent play on “Dead Presidents”. ;-)
