Hollywood Bowl
Here are eight great reasons to love the Hollywood Bowl in 2006:
- Prairie Home Companion
- Sergio Mendes
- The LA Philharmonic performing “Bugs Bunny on Broadway”
- Tom Jones (Tom $#@!%&*@ Jones!)
- The Flaming Lips and Thievery Corporation
- The LA Philharmonic performing Mahler’s First
- James Brown
- Willie Nelson and Neko Case
Just seeing these shows would be good enough for me. The Bowl makes it so easy and so affordable to see great, great acts like this. For one person to see all of these shows, the total cost is under $75. That the same price as one or two shows at a similarly-sized venue with the same sort of acts, and you usually can’t bring your own food to the other places.
The Bowl is one of my favorite things about summer. I can’t think about living somewhere other than Los Angeles without wondering where I’ll see big names live without going broken in the process. Thanks, Hollywood Bowl. You really do make summers for me.

I really gotta see the Bugs Bunny thing this year. Or, you know, the bowl in general.
Can you explain what the DEAL is with Prarie Home Companion? I was forced to listen to that shit all day long (or at least it seemed like it) on a few Saturdays back in the 80s and it was just about the most boring thing I can imagine. I guess hearing it at the Bowl would be good if I wanted to take a nice nap outside in a park and not get hassled by the cops.

Why you gotta hate?
I didn’t like it at first, but it’s grown on me. It’s more of a weekend ritual than anything else: old-timey, relaxing radio fun on the weekend.
