I believe the Republic of Canada also tempts the wandering tourist with Cubano tobacco.

Even more of a secret, Cuban rum is much higher quality than your typical Puerto Rican variety. But you didn't here that from me.....

I also hear from a US Customs Advisory that it is illegal to acquire Cuban cigars from another country, such as Mexico. Who would do such a patently illegal thing, such as go to Mexico and purchase Cuban cigars? I for one, would never even suggest that anyone, who happened to be on a trip to Mexico, buy Cuban cigars and bring them back to the U.S. I mean, such a thought has never even crossed my mind, it's so ludicrous.

If the story of how you got them involves the phrase "I know a guy who knows a guy," they're fake.

As I have at best a casual understanding of how all of this works, the specifics of the real answer are beyond my ken. I know that there are certain things about the packaging and banding that you look for to determine authenticity, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what they are. I've heard some cigar nerds say things along the lines of "of course they're fake. Cohiba didn't even make a maduro double churchill in 2003." Perhaps the real story here is that if you know everything there is to know about cigars, it's harder to wind up buying fakes.

Oh fictional sage of the tobacco leaf-

How would I, a lowly non-conoseur of the cuban cigar know whether or not I am being offered fake cubans?
