I'd be fine with it if he rode more, but he just doesn't. For example, the trip we took the other weekend -- maybe 14 miles round trip -- at least tripled the total distance he's ridden in his entire life. That's a tiny fraction of the bike riding experience I had at his age, and my commute to school didn't involve Huntington or Myrtle or Duarte, none of which are exactly bike-friendly.

That said: yeah, do it with him a few times and he'll almost certainly be fine to do it on his own afterwards.

I rode my bike to school and back from 3rd to 8th grade. It was about a mile, two very busy streets. They did have bike lanes.

I managed to wipe out spectacularly a couple of times, but never dangerously. We adults sometimes forget how competent younglings actually are... The Kid will undoubtedly be fine.

Perhaps if one of us rode down there with him? I'd certainly be willing to give it a go....

Now all we've got to figure out is how to get to Santa Fe MS with the kid. It's right on the cusp of 2 miles, and I feel like a heel driving to the gym afterwards. He's strong enough to get there, but I worry about mental alertness in morning traffic. Thoughts?
