The left-handed bits I bought were cobalt, and they were definitely badass in that they went right through the bolt. At this point I'm sort of content to just leave the broken crap there as a reminder to the bike that I'll just tack more parts on to it if it tries to step to me like that.

You and Erich should definitely make it out for beers in Claremont next week so you can tell the story to everybody. It sounds like a good one.

I have never had a situation where one of those damn screw extractors has worked -- they always break. Maybe if you could get them made out of cobalt or whatever it is my awesome metal bits are made out of (speaking of which, I hear Erich couldn't find them... we'll have to look this weekend so that you emerge with a flawless victory over the bolt).

WRT wrenching-when-angry and attaching-parts-without-grease, I recommend you ask Erich to tell you the "honey, get me a hammer" story. Or, I think maybe, ask me and Erich to both tell it the next time we're together -- he often leaves out the funny parts because, I dunno, they make him look bad or something.

No, I definitely emerged victorious. You see, the broken bolt's goal was to keep the rack and fender off my bike, but both are clearly on the bike. Victory is mine.
